A BB-Shopping Customer Uses Her Cobra PMR725 Walkie Talkies As Monitors For Goat Kidding
We have a small herd of pedigree dairy goats and are about to kid 6 of them for the first time. Although goats are generally pretty good at getting on with the job themselves, we would like to be around for the kiddings just in case anything should go wrong (and as first time 'parents' we are excited about it as well!). As we can't be in the goat shed 24 hours a day, we wanted some kind of system whereby we could see or hear if something out of the ordinary was going on, especially during the night. As we don't have telephone lines anywhere near the goat shed and the mobile telephone signal is appalling in the area (even though we are at the top of a hill), internet access (wireless or otherwise) for webcams was completely out of the question. Other goatkeepers use normal baby monitors but for us this was not an option as we wanted to be able to keep an ear on the goat shed from various locations, one of which is over a mile from the farm. So, when I hit upon the Cobra MT725 radios with baby monitor facility, it seemed like the ideal solution.
We have the transmitting radio fixed up in the goat shed above the pens where the goats are about to kid and the receiving radio travels with us into the house or a mile up the road. We are still playing with the sensitivity levels on the radio but were surprised at the range of the radio to pick up sounds as we can hear all the goats in the shed, regardless of where they are. This can sometimes be confusing and you have to be able to recognise the various bleats to know who is making the noise! A rattle of a pen gate or a cough will set the radio off and if the noises do not continue long enough, then all we get on the receiving end is static .. however, if someone sets the monitor off and then continues to make a noise, we can hear it without a problem. So far, so good ... Kidding is due to start at the weekend but could happen anytime from now, so the radios are in constant use overnight. Just as an aside, we have them switched on for over 12 hours a night and we are on our third night without having to recharge them.
Fantastic, simple and easy solution that does exactly what we want! |
