I want to use these while I am cycling, are they completely hands free, do I need to hold down any buttons to talk?

The radio does have a VOX operation mode. If used in conjunction with a headset, you should be able to do this.

Is it possible to use ordinary batteries with this product, and are the units waterproof?

It is not possible to use ordinary batteries with this unit, however on a full charge, they will support 35 hours standby an 2 hours talk time. They are not weatherproof.

Yes, with PMR446 radios they can all communicate with each other when on the same channel / sub channel.

Can I use a throat mic with these?
I can see they are available as a seperate item, but it's unclear as to which throat mic set would work with this model.

The one that you need is part number VOICEBOXPTTDORO. Search for this in the search box, you need one voicebox for each doro unit.

It is supplied with to basic headsets, however the only other headset we have is the cool talk throat mic, which is ideal for skiing / cycling and motorbikes.

Can these be used as baby monitors?

They are not recommended as baby monitors as it does not cut the baby speaker when in VOX mode. We would recommend the Doro BM35, BM40, Cobra MT750 or Cobra MT800 for use as baby monitors.
